I have no idea what happened to Nic Harcourt but Morning Becomes Eclectic, the morning program on alt-rock KCRW that he used to host is now being hosted by an American. (drat.) and an American that wasn't asking very good questions IMO when Delphic was on Monday morning live in session. below is the video for 'Counterpoint' from the studio, but you can listen to the whole session and interview archived here.
as for the video, all I can say is...gosh, Dan Hadley has some big guns! wouldn't want to get into a fight with him.

2/3 of Delphic with Mike Joyce / East Village Radio
the whole interview with Delphic's James and Rick was on East Village Radio last week but they've got video for anyone who missed it on Thursday.
friggin' adorable.
I still can't believe they're playing in MY town, tonight, in front of me and all my friends. this is just huge.
you don't understand, bands don't do one-offs in DC. this is something truly special.

Radio1 rewind: Delphic in the Live Lounge
I hadn't considered that Delphic had been invited into the Radio1 Live Lounge until Rick Boardman mentioned it to me in passing. I also had no idea what the deal was about the covers until he told me that the bands who get invited have to choose from a small list of options for the obligatory cover,.and this probably explains why everyone for a while was doing Kings of Leon's 'Use Somebody'. as a joke, they decided to do Cheryl Cole's '3 Words', because Rick wanted to do the feminine higher singing parts with James doing the lead vocals. we had a good laugh about this but after hearing it TBH I think the results are stunning.
I am also including their live version of 'Halcyon' from the same session and the original '3 Words' if you want to compare their cover to the original.

you talking to me? I might just laugh right in your face.
first, here's what I've got for you regular readers...gig and interview posts from January 2010:
We Are Scientists (Uninhabitable Mansions supporting) - 21.01.10 - Black Cat, Washington, DC - my Popwreckoning review my There Goes the Fear review
my interview with Chris Cain and Keith Murray of We Are Scientists part 1 part 2
the Cribs (Adam Green and the Dead Trees supporting) - 19.01.10 - 9:30 Club, Washington, DC - my Popwreckoning review tag team interview with Ross Jarman
--
word of note to any aspiring bloggers:
you will receive far more personal insults and complaints about your writing than you ever will compliments.
last night before bed, I made the mistake of visiting the Web's authoritative blog/site for all things We Are Scientists. the owner, the lovely Renee Barrera, had kindly posted links to my two gig reviews (done separately for PW and TGTF) and my two-part interview with Chris Cain and Keith Murray. I don't know why I bothered to look at the comments. well, actually, I do know why I bothered. I was hoping someone would say, "great job!" or "this was a fun interview, I'm glad she was able to meet them and post the interview for us." I had expected the complete gloss over of me as interviewer - after all, this was a WAS interview, and they're the stars of the piece, not me.
I was, however, not expecting for one female fan to say she wanted to punch me in the face for the way I laughed in the interview, with another fan concurring with her statement.
really? you're threatening someone with physical force for having a good time? while they're interviewing your favourite band? and getting insights about the said band for you?
I'm never going to apologise for the way I laugh. there's a reason why I laugh when I'm interviewing someone: it's because I approach band interviews in a light-hearted way. I know bands are usually tired and having already been through their umpteenth interview, they're not looking forward to talking to some blogger like me that they've never met from a blog they've never heard of.
so I try to make my questions interesting. I do my research way ahead of time to come up with some queries for them that they haven't heard before, so it's more fun for them and they'll feel more comfortable talking to me and feel like they can trust me, like we've been mates for years. that's the goal anyway. and comfort is key to a successful interview, in my experience.
my first big interview (with Friendly Fires) worked out extremely well because we had already broken the ice (the Ed[d]s couldn't believe I'd travelled by myself to another country to see them) and they seemed to appreciate the questions I'd asked them weren't the same run of the mill "how did you guys get together?" (answer: they met at school) types. when you can prove to someone that you've done your homework and that you're a real music fan, things usually come together better than you expect.
and I've thought to myself, if Chris Cain really hated the way I laughed, I doubt he would have talked to me for over an hour beyond the interview itself. agree?
and going back to my laugh...I have many stories about my "unique" laugh. the most recent I can think of is being in hospital last summer and having been "heard" before I had been "seen" by my attending nurse, who swiftly explained that my laugh was particularly joyous. at the time, I was getting blood drawn in the infusion (cancer) ward so I was happy to provide a little sunshine. so apparently my laugh is memorable by the good folks of Georgetown Hospital. and that's a good thing, b/c people who get stuck there often don't have much to smile - or laugh - about.
folks, this isn't 'Dateline', '20/20', or '60 Minutes'. and feel free to discuss the content of the interview, b/c that's what I work hard at. but taking pot shots at my guffaw? that's going below the belt.
--
however, today was an eminently better day:
Friendly Fires came to the Radio1 studios for a chat with Fearne Cotton about their chances for the two BRITs they have been nominated for. as usual, it was lolzworthy, including Fearne imploring a wary (and trying desperately not to give any more fuel to the fire that he's fey) Ed Macfarlane to stroke Jack Savidge's newly clean shaven chin (er...?); Jack mispronouncing the name of his "favourite" member of JLS; and Edd Gibson insisting that should Peter Kay ring them in Australia at 4 AM local time with the news that they've won a BRIT, they'll all be dressed in their nightgowns ala Wee Willie Winkie.
I would also like to note here that both Fearne Cotton and Ed Mac have equally unique and possibly annoying laughs like mine so really, if those WAS fans have a beef with the way I chortle, they can take similar complaints to them as well.
listen here
Fanfarlo were Marc Riley's live in-session guests at the Manchester Oxford Road studios this evening, and they played four songs on 6music. absolutely brilliant.

02 August 2009
I have an announcement!
well, I have several, actually. some of them I just haven't had the time to post about until now. for my sanity, I'll put them in chronologic order:
--
1. in June I posted a letter to one of my music journo heroes, Stuart Maconie (he of 6music's Sunday programme "Freak Zone" and the copresenter of Radio2's nightly programme "Radcliffe and Maconie") . he's always been a bit of a living legend in my and my friends' eyes b/c he has interviewed Morrissey more times you can shake a stick at and, from all appearances, has somehow maintained a confidence and kinship with the man. I stuck an international reply coupon and an SASE in with my letter, thinking that if he'd have time, he'd post me a promo picture of Mark and himself or something equally nonpersonal.
so on the second week of July, I come home from a long day's work and see in my pile of mail an envelope with this in the upper right hand corner:

I bit my lip as I opened the envelope and revealed a letter Stuart himself had typed out on A4 paper using MS Word. I won't bore you with the details, but the end of the letter (right before his signature in black Sharpie) was this:
Do what you love is my advice. And take care of yourself
S
xx
the man must receive bags upon bags of mail every day from his devoted legions of fans around the UK alone, not to mention anyone outside of the UK's borders who might fancy a listen to one of his shows. and he chose to write to me. I am v. grateful.
2. interestingly, there is a sideways connection between what Stuart Mac wrote me in his letter and Ed Mac of Friendly Fires. the day Stu wrote me was the day the Phenomenal Handclap Band was scheduled to come in for a live session for Radcliffe/Maconie. as usual, I tuned in that night, not knowing that it was the v. same day Stuart was going to write a letter to me. I knew nothing about the PHB until that morning of their session, when I opened an email from the le poisson rouge mailing list - where I'm seeing the Fires on the 12th - and I see the PHB is their support act.
I dunno about you, but I find the timing of both the email and when the band were visiting the Oxford Road BBC Manchester studios, ALONG WITH the choice of opening act must be more than a coincidence! I even dashed off a reply to Stuart with what had happened - this time no IRC and SASE, b/c I figured he didn't need to be bothered further! - but I thought he might be amused with this startling set of events.
at any rate, the PHB's live session with Mark and Stu was phenomenal (no pun intended) so I am looking forward to photographing and seeing them live in 10 days. eep!
3. my Paolo Nutini/Matt Hires/Erin McCarley gig report was made a featured item at Popwreckoning. you can read it here. I wasn't too impressed with Paolo (I think he may have just been a little pissed before coming onstage) but I really enjoyed Matt and Erin's sets and would have been happy if it'd just been the two of them.
Erin McCarley with her purty acoustic

that was the third time I'd been at the 9:30 this year and definitely the worst experience of the three. Doves had been sold out, yet tall guys let me stand in front of them on the balcony. the Camera Obscura crowd was filled with relatively mellow people - just like their music - and I never once felt threatened. fast forward a month to the Paolo Nutini show. let's just say that there were totally rabid fans from age 16 to age 50 and they screamed equally as loudly and passionately for Paolo, and the older set grated on my nerves for their "I'm allowed to be a b*tch and treat you like crap" sense of entitlement. when I went to go get my press pass - which was an ordeal in itself that I don't want to relive by typing it out here - one of these women shouted at the guy at the window that Paolo's tour manager had said she could go in before everyone else, because "I have to be in the front."
lady, unless you're his mum, you line up with the rest of us. end of story.
I do not have a problem with REAL fans lining up early and taking up the front spots b/c I'd rather have a real fan in front than a posturing industry type or someone who's shoved their way to the front from the back. we're all fans and we're in this together - be kind to your fellow fan.
4. bands have been making fall tour announcements left and right. some of the blast from the past notables:
Pearl Jam
Manic Street Preachers
Muse (touring w/ U2)
Leonard Cohen
Mew
5. good lord this has gotten long. will be back in a mo' with another post to finish up...

25 June 2009
"this time baby, I'll be bulletproof."
I wish.
I went to the Nylon tour gig at the Rock 'n' Roll Hotel last night. despite leaving 5 songs into Patrick Wolf's set and being gutted about that - he started at 11.20 PM presumably according to this Twitter because he was being interviewed by Japanese journos in his comfy hotel room (?!?) and having a heart attack about not catching the train back out of town (I actually made the v. last train home, can you believe it?)...
...I am shattered.
somehow I managed to write about 1/2 of the review on the train ride back, but have to go through the photos and such and sort everything out. watch this space.
--
the punters are out in record numbers for Glasto. Steve Lamacq has already headed down there and has the kind of gig/interview/general schmoozing schedule you'd envy, if you weren't human and didn't actually need sleep. since I can't be there, I will be living it up remotely via the DC9 Glasto happy hour on Sunday early evening (17.00-20.00 Washington time, 22.00-. we're hoping that we'll catch Blur's closing set.
--
and for those who aren't at Glasto OR going to the Sunday DC9 happy hour, have a read at Friendly Fires's drummer Jack Savidge's earlier Tweets:

Radio 1 Essential Mix - on air at 03.00-05.00 London time I believe in the wee hours of Saturday, which would mean 22.00-0.00 late Friday night for us on the East Coast. sorry, but I'll defo be sleeping! will have to catch this later on iPlayer...

oh yeah, and I just heard White Denim will be live on Marc Riley's show on 6music tonight.

edit 16.05: in the wee hours of the morning of Monday 11 May, the Rob da Bank and Friends programme of Radio1 had Friendly Fires on (my latest English band obsession) with their A-Z chosen tracks. catch it if you can here. if not, here's the tracks they chose:

F. Friendly Fires – ‘Jump In The Pool (Thin White Duke remix)’ (XL)

I. Inner City – ‘Big Fun’ (Virgin)

N. Nas – ‘It’s Ain’t Hard To Tell’ (Columbia)

Stereogum "Decompressed" - remember the "MTV Unplugged" days?
look what I found! for those of you like me who remember the good ol' days of MTV Unplugged, or the later and also very good VH1 Storytellers, Stereogum has a similar online series called Decomposed featuring up and coming artists performing stripped down versions of their songs. and some v. pretty photos, if I might add.
here are links to three of them:
the Soft Pack
Friendly Fires - who interestingly enough is the first non-American band to take the Decompressed stage
the lovely School of Seven Bells - who you might know through their single "iamundernodisguise"

the promising Soft Pack / this week's Roundtable
The Soft Pack performed on Marc Riley's show last night (I can't be the only one who is grooving to the California band's single, "Nightlife"). Rob Hughes was standing in for an absent Marc and I asked him to ask TSP about what they call the "NME tour" they are doing when they come back to America next month - no, I did not ask for humour, I just wanted to know were they really on an NME tour extension? they didn't answer me but they *did* play three songs - "Extinction," "On My Time," and "Parasites", all of which can be listened to on their MySpace.
--
Thursday's Roundtable sees Jon McClure from Mongrel join the Music Week's Matt Everett and Fierce Panda's Simon Williams
1. The Enemy - "No Time for Tears" - another hearkening back to the '80s? even for that, not a fan.
2. Jack Penate - "Tonight's Today" - dunno why but the chorus reminds me too much of the arm swaying tendency of Barry Manilow's "Copacabana." it may grow on me but right now that repeating refrain is really annoying. I am still annoyed by the repetition of Wintersleep's "Oblivion" (even though they played the Hub earlier this week). a chatroom participant called it "indie tropicana" which brought Lammo and the other guests laughter.
3. Chew Lips - "Solo" - I am amused - and appreciative - for all these dancey-type songs coming out. I think it was Ladyhawke's "My Delirium" last year that got my ears pricked for tunes that tap Atari-era electronic sounds. a chatroom participant said it sounds like she was just playing the Legend of Zelda. quite. my thoughts exactly!
4. the Noisettes - "Don't Upset the Rhythm" - now I'm confused about this outfit. I *loved* "Wild Young Hearts." I hear this song and think, oh no, oh no no no no - they're sounding like everyone else now! but that's just me...
5. the winner - Titus Andronicus - "My Time Outside the Womb" - I was excited when I saw they were coming to D.C. on 19 April, especially since this is days after the tax man cometh. then I realised, darn, I won't be in town! (this happened last October too, when the Wedding Present decided to visit the area.) but back to the song - not impressed. it's a let-down after their first single.
6. Calvin Harris - "I'm Not Alone" - I heard this earlier and am still not impressed. in the middle, the song does a schizo leap, b/c it decides it should be synth pop.
7. Morrissey's new album "Years of Refusal" (out this week in the U.S. and the UK) - clips of "Paris," "Black Cloud," "That's How People Grow Up," and "It's Not Your Birthday Anymore" - and "Something is Squeezing My Skull" and "One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell" in full - Lammo said Morrissey is starting to be like the Ramones - how you'll know exactly what his next record will sound like. (discuss!)
for my part, I have to say "Paris," "That's How People Grow Up," and "One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell" sound a lot better live than on the recording. glad that my "date" with the Mozzer is less than 5 weeks away :)

Moz on Radio 2 Live last night / this week's Roundtable
I am not sure what to make of the Morrissey gig at the BBC Radio Theatre last night (available on the Rad/Mac page for the next 6 days). all the tracks seemed laboured.
I *did* highly enjoy "Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself?"

Thursday's Roundtable sees Radio 1's Bethan Elfyn join journalist Leonie Cooper in reviewing some new releases
(FYI Simon Raymonde of Bella Union Records (and ex-Cocteau Twins) was added at the last minute.)
1. Pet Shop Boys - "Love Etcetera" - dunno but this sounds old and tired to me. what do you think?
2. Peter Bjorn and John - "Nothing to Worry About" - just on principle, I should be against this b/c Kanye West is singing this band's praises. I agree with Leonie's assessment that the song sounds very Lykke Li, but Lykke Li does it better.
3. Spinnerette - "Ghetto Love" - the singer sounds like Chrissie Hynde, or maybe the vocalist for the Waitresses - neither of which are a compliment.
4. Hockey - "Too Fake" - perhaps I am jaded, but this sounds like other stuff that's out. their synth play remind me of Passion Pit, who they are touring with in England. hear this track and you'll understand what I'm talking about.
5. the winner - a tune by Maccabees - this reminds me of the new wave of shoegazing that is currently being led by White Lies.
6. Lady Sovereign - "So Human" - I am generally not a fan of rap or hip-hop but I like this one. it's got a nice melody and dancey backbeat - stolen from the Cure's "Close to Me". maybe that's why I dig it more than I should...anyhoo, you'd see me grooving to this at the disco.
7. Airborne Toxic Event (album of the week) - "Does This Mean You're Moving On?" - "so dumb, so dumb, so dumb, so dumb"...??? this does not make me optimistic about the gig of theirs I am going to next month. :/ Steve also played "Something New" which begins like a '60s song that I cannot think the title of right now...have a listen and tell me what it is, please! I have also read on the net it sounds like Jam's "A Town Called Malice." I don't agree. when I think of that song, I think of the crazy dancing scene in "Billy Elliott" when Jamie Bell is tip-tapping his way through his little town.
random tip of the day: this is of no consequence, but I am really digging Royksopp's "Happy Up Here" more than I should. this is evidenced by my brain thinking it really wants me to start doing jazz hands or rollerskate every time the song cues up on the radio.

Franz Ferdinand on special Hub session w/ interview on Lammo, tomorrow, 21.10.09
from Steve Lamacq's 6Music page:
The new Franz Ferdinand album is almost here, and to celebrate the band join Steve on Wednesday for a special Hub Session and interview.
here is the rest of the Hub schedule through the end of January. please note that the Hub almost always on George Lamb's morning show (10.00 to 13.00 GMT) on 6Music.
22nd Jan - Fight Like Apes
23rd Jan - Little Joy
27th Jan - Cage The Elephant
28th Jan - Delta Spirit
29th Jan - Eagles of Death Metal

sorry to be a party pooper but unlike the hordes that have descended on our great city for the inauguration to end all inaugurations I am at home, keeping warm with a cuppa, and watching things unfold on tv. I did however send a note over to Nemone to suggest the Lilac Time's "American Eyes" for a "stars and stripes" tune of the day for her show, so you listen again to her show if you want to hear it.
random tip of the day: if you are a keen viewer of Anthony Bourdain's programme "No Reservations," you may be interested to know that last night's episode was filmed in Washington D.C. he had the requisite half-smoke at Ben's Chili Bowl, the soon-to-be Obama family hangout (b/c like Bill Cosby, they will never need to pay for their meals, ever).
I also want to note Busboys & Poets, where they have awesome cajun salmon. one day I will read my poetry there. I think :)

live Morrissey interview/gig on 11 February, Radio2
Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie are travelling down from their comfy confines at the Oxford Road Studios to Broadcasting House, London, to bear witness to a long-time-coming session with the man Morrissey, supposedly beginning with a interview segment. to be broadcast live on Wednesday, 11 February, at their usual show time of 20.00 to 22.00.
info on the 100 pairs of tickets being given away at Radio2's Web site. yet another reason why I hate being on the wrong side of the Atlantic! ::fumes::
random tip of the day: 5 days left to listen to the 12 January Morrissey announcement at 40 min into the Radcliffe/Maconie show and what's more, a humourous bit at 1 hr 5 min into it about someone's mum and fried chicken. seriously tho, it is on topic. I am respectful and amused by Stuart Mac and I think the feeling is mutual :D
